Tips for Choosing Colors When Decorating Your Home

Redecorating your home is a way to breathe new life into the space without having to spend a lot of money on renovations or remodeling. If you aren’t sure where to start with your redecorating plans, you can pick out your color scheme and everything will fall quickly into place. Here are some expert tips on choosing colors when decorating your home:

Get to Know Your Color Wheel

The color wheel is a circle of colors used in the arts, graphic design, and interior decorating. The color wheel contains primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, and the colors’ placement in proximity to each other indicates their relationship with each other. For instance, two colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel are complementary, and two colors that are next to each other are analogous. Decide whether you want to decorate in complementary colors, or analogous colors.

Use the 60-30-10 Rule

The 60-30-10 Rule is the oldest rule in interior design. It means that 60% of the colors used in your design scheme should be your main color, e.g., the wall or floor color. 30% should be your secondary color, represented in your furniture, draperies, or throw rugs. 10% should be an accent color, used sparingly throughout your decor. If your accent color is pale pink, you could have a pale pink color represented in the design of your area rug, throw pillows, curtains, or artwork on the wall.

Use the Rule of Three

The Rule of Three states that using odd numbers in your interior design will create an interesting balance and flow. This includes using three colors in your decor. Once you have chosen your three colors for the main room in your home, one of those colors should carry on throughout the decor in the rest of your house to create balance and flow.
