Congratulations on your new home! Whether you want your new home to echo the colors and beauty of the Southwestern desert, or you prefer more traditional décor, you’re going to want to pick out a rug or rugs for your new home. Choosing the right size rug depends on a few different factors.
The Size of the Room
A floor rug can make a smaller room seem more spacious, and can draw focus to or create boundaries in a large room so it doesn’t seem empty or cavernous. Here is a handy chart to show you the recommended rug size for your room size:
Room Size Rug Size
5 x 7 feet 3 x 5 feet
7 x 10 feet 5 x 8 feet
10 x 12 feet 8 x 10 feet
11 x 14 feet 9 x 12 feet
14 x 17 feet 12 x 15 feet
Rug Placement
If the rug will be under a bed, dining table, sofa, or coffee table, you want at least 6 inches of rug to be visible on all sides of the furniture. This will create a focal point in your interior design, and also prevent the rug from overpowering the room. For instance, if you’re picking out a rug for your master bedroom and you have a queen size bed, an 8′ x 10′ rug is the perfect size for your bed and nightstands.
Rug Shape
Your rug doesn’t have to be rectangular! You can pick out a round or square rug that will complement the décor and furniture placement of the room. For instance, if you have a round dining table, a round area rug might look better underneath it than a rectangular rug. Don’t be afraid to experiment and consider new and different rug shapes. You might be surprised by what you end up liking!
