Hitting the Links in Cochise County

If you are planning a move to Sierra Vista, you might be excited to break out your clubs and explore the area’s golf courses, which—unlike courses in colder, wetter climate regions—are operational year-round to cater to even the most avid golfers. Even if you are not much of a golfer now, you might get into the sport with its wide accessibility surrounding Sierra Vista throughout Cochise County.

Playing Golf in the High Desert

Because there is rarely snow in Sierra Vista and Cochise County has a fairly mild climate, golf is a year-round sport in this part of Arizona. You may see the occasional dusting of snow on the course in the winter, though snow rarely sticks when it falls in the valley. However, the city is still high enough in elevation that Sierra Vista remains much cooler in the summer than Tucson and Phoenix—generally temperatures are at least 10 degrees cooler in Cochise County throughout the summer season.

You may be struck by the landscape in any season if you are from somewhere with more grass and trees, since desert golf showcases more of the surrounding natural landscape, which is a contrast to the lush greens of the course. Even on the hotter days of summer, it’s easy to at least get a quick nine in during the early morning hours. Still, there are some rules to remember to have a comfortable and safe day on the course.

  • Apply sunscreen throughout your game and wear protective clothing.
  • Drink plenty of water, even before you start feeling thirsty.
  • Watch out for native wildlife, such as bobcats, javelinas, and rattlesnakes, which may be attracted to the lusher vegetation and water features on the course.
  • Consider wayward shots lateral hazards—looking for your ball in the desert landscape may be more dangerous than it’s worth due to cacti, snakes, and other unfriendly natural features.

These guidelines are important in every season, but especially during the sunny and dry summers. Of course, summer also brings monsoons, which should keep you away from the course. When lightning and flash floods are in the forecast, you should reschedule your tee time. Monsoons tend to strike in the late afternoon, so early morning games are overall a better choice for summer.
