Your Guide to Decluttering Before Your Move

If you are preparing to sell your home and make a move to a new home in Sierra Vista, you won’t want to bring the clutter of your old house with you. Not only will clutter mean more boxes to move, but it can keep you from setting up a clean, functional space in your new house. By taking the time to declutter before your move, you can make the moving process much easier for the whole family. Here’s how to get started:

Start with Your Storage Areas

The easiest way to start tackling clutter is with the items you don’t use very often. Clean out closets, under-stairs storage, basements, crawl spaces, and anywhere else you may be holding on to old boxes and unused clothing and furniture. Once you’ve pared down these items, you can go room by room to eliminate anything you don’t use or that is no longer functional.

Use the 1-Year Rule

A good rule of decluttering is to throw out, donate, or sell anything that you haven’t used in the past year. You might make a few exceptions for family heirlooms or old children’s clothing, but with most items you haven’t used in the past year, you won’t likely use them again in the future. Be especially scrutinizing with items like old electronics, cans of paint, and out of style clothing.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Decluttering can be a long process—especially if you have lived in the same house for many years. Therefore, it’s not a job to put off until the last minute. As soon as you start to consider moving, it’s a good idea to begin decluttering the house.
