Your First Spring in Arizona? Here’s a Spring Gardening Schedule You’ll Love!

If you want to have a vibrant spring garden in Southern Arizona, it’s not too late. While some plants and flowers need to be planted in fall in order to bloom in spring, others can be planted at the first signs of warmer weather. Take a look at our gardening schedule for your first spring garden here in Arizona.

March Planting

March 15th is usually the last day of frost in Southern Arizona. This is the perfect time to plant transplants of peppers and tomatoes. You can also plant hardy plants like basil, sweet corn, lima beans and snap beans, watermelon, cantaloupe, and squash. Once overnight temperatures have consistently been in the 40s and 50s, you can plant chilies and chiltepines, gourds, tomatillos, black-eyed peas, cane sorghum, and teosinte. You can also plant annuals like marigolds, sunflowers, and amaranth.

April Planting

April is the perfect time to start planting things that grow quickly in the warmer weather. This includes cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, asparagus, okra, eggplant, and pumpkins. You can also plant summer bulbs like caladium, iris, glads, and anna. You can also plant trellis plants and native plants.

May Planting

You can plant heat-tolerant plants and vegetables throughout May. This includes beans, peanuts, peppers, sweet potatoes, and eggplants.

June & July Planting

In June and July, you’ll want to cover your tomato plants or bring them inside. You can also cover the soil with mulch to retain moisture and lower the risk of heat stress for your remaining plants and flowers. Make sure you adjust your watering schedule as summer begins.
