Get Ready for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life

Chances are, someone in your life has been affected by cancer. This October, you can do your part to fight back against cancer by participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This is an event that takes place in cities across the nation to raise money for cancer research, advocacy, and patient support. Relay for Life will be in Sierra Vista this October, and you can participate in several different ways as a donor, participant, or attendee.

Where and When Is the Relay for Life?

Sierra Vista’s 2023 Relay for Life will be held at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Saturday, October 21st from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. The day will consist of several events, including live entertainment, and there will be food vendors on site for this family-friendly celebration of remembrance and community strength.

Relay for Life Events

The Relay for Life is not a run or a race. Instead, it is a walking relay with several different phases to honor those who have been impacted by cancer. The day’s events will include:

  • Celebrate – Cancer Survivors: The first leg of the Relay honors and celebrates cancer survivors, who are welcomed to walk the track. Other attendees are encouraged to line the track and make lots of noise to cheer on these survivors and create a positive, energetic environment.
  • Celebrate – Caregivers: Next, caregivers are welcomed to take a lap alongside the survivors. Caregivers are friends, family, and medical providers who are currently helping someone with cancer or have done so in the past.
  • Luminaria Ceremony: As the sun sets, relay teams will brighten up the track by placing and lighting luminarias that honor those we have lost to cancer and reflect on the journey of those who have survived. Luminarias are customized to include dedications and personalized messages to honor every life that’s been touched by cancer.

How to Prepare

Relay teams are invited to set up campsites where they can gather and relax between various events. Bring along chairs, a pop-up tent, garbage bags, a cash box or money collection envelope, laminated signs, portable cell phone chargers, and decorations. Personal items including sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, extra clothes, comfortable shoes, and cash are recommended. Tobacco and alcohol are not allowed on site. Please also leave any pets at home aside from service animals.

If you want to sign up as a participant in the Relay for Life, you can do so on the American Cancer Society’s website. You can also dedicate a luminaria or donate funds directly online. Even if you are not participating in the Relay itself, you can attend the event and show your support.
