Copper mining is one of the industries that drove the early economic growth of Arizona, and it is still an important industry in the state to this day. At Copper Queen Mine, you can see a portion of what used to be a thriving copper mine in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although Copper Queen Mine was closed in summer of 1975, it lives on thanks to the efforts of the surrounding community to preserve and showcase this site. Mine tours will take you underground to a remarkable depth of 1,500 feet, making a Copper Queen Mine Tour a welcome escape from the summer heat and a great opportunity to learn about the early development of Bisbee, AZ.
Getting to Copper Queen Mine
Copper Queen Mine is located in Bisbee, AZ, which is about 30 minutes from Sierra Vista. To get to the mine, take AZ-90 S for about 15 miles, and then turn right onto AZ-80 E. Take the exit toward Old Bisbee/Historic District, and then keep right at the fork. The mine will be on the left, and there is an ample parking lot for visitors.
Booking Your Tour
You must book your mine tour in advance. Reservations can fill up quickly, so plan ahead. You will need to arrive about 30 minutes prior to the tour time on your tickets. Guests must be aged 5 or older to take the tour.
Going Underground
Once you’re at the mine, you’ll be ready to embark on an underground adventure that lasts about one hour. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and consider bringing a light jacket or sweater, as it can get quite chilly underground. Closed toed shoes are required, and heels are not allowed. Visitors will receive hard hats, safety vests, and headlamps, which are required attire for the tour. On the tour, you’ll ride an original mine train, straddling a bench seat (it’s a lot like riding a bicycle). You’ll head deep into the mine and learn all about its history (and the dangers that once lurked there) from your tour guide. There are two stops on the tour where you can disembark the train and explore the tunnels by foot. There are some steps and rocky terrain along the way, and you can choose to stay seated on the train if you’re not up for climbing steps.
Completing Your Visit
Copper Queen Mine is right next to the Bisbee Historic District, where you’ll find plenty of shops, galleries, and restaurants.
