3 Things You Might Not Know About Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista, Arizona is widely considered one of the most scenic towns in the state. It offers residents plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, wildlife encounters, and cultural enrichment. If you’re thinking of visiting or moving to Sierra Vista, here’s a look at what you should know.

It’s the Hummingbird Capital of the U.S.

Every year, thousands of migratory hummingbirds visit the Sierra Vista area on their annual journey. You can see up to 10 different species of hummingbirds along the San Pedro River corridor alone. Of the 23 species of hummingbirds documented in the U.S., 17 of them have been spotted in the vicinity of the town. You can go out with your family and a trusty pair of binoculars to do your own bird watching, or you can attend one of the scheduled events of the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory. They hold annual hummingbird banding events for research purposes, and the public is welcome to attend these enchanting encounters.

The farmers market is like a weekly fair.

Many communities hold weekly farmers markets, but few do it quite like Sierra Vista. In this town, it’s more like a weekly celebration that the entire community is welcome to attend. Every Thursday, you’ll find the Sierra Vista Farmers Market at the Veterans Memorial Park. Dozens of local vendors sell farm fresh eggs, fruits, and vegetables, along with locally raised meats ranging from beef and chicken to emu and yak. You’ll also find locally prepared foods, like jams and salsas. Shop while you enjoy live music and entertainment. And don’t forget to check out the food trucks!

It’s home to the Sky Islands Summit Challenge.

This annual event, which takes place in May, challenges participants to climb one, two, or three peaks in just one day. Just 250 participants are registered each year, so sign up early if you want to get in on the fun! The summits include Carr Peak, Miller Peak, and Pat Scott Peak.
