Arizona Hikes That Are Perfect for Winter

Winter in Arizona doesn’t mean quite the same thing as it does in other places. The winter months are inviting and sunny—the perfect weather for getting outdoors and exploring the state’s mountains and trains before the temperatures climb. When you call Sierra Vista home, you’re surrounded by amazing scenery that is begging to be explored every day, but winter day trips to other parts of the state can be great for hiking as well. Grab some layers of clothing to stay comfortable in changing temperatures and plenty of water, and head out to some of these winter-friendly hikes.

Echo Canyon Trail

There are more mountains in Arizona than in Switzerland. In Phoenix, the tallest peak is Camelback Mountain, and the best way to get to the top to take in the views is the Echo Canyon trail. The trail itself is relatively short at 1.2 miles, but the hike is challenging and requires climbing in addition to the usual walking. If you’re not sure you’re up for this adventure hike, you can also reach the top on the Cholla Trail, which is marginally less steep.

Sabino Canyon Recreation Area

The Sabino Canyon recreation area is on the northeast side of Tucson at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains. There are multiple hikes throughout the canyon area, and the degree of difficulty is noted for each one, so you can select the right fit for your experience. If you head to the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area and decide you’d rather take it easy, you can see the sites by open-air tram as well.

Yuma East Wetlands

Get a change of pace from the mountains and explore the Yuma East Wetlands along the Colorado River. There is a three-mile hiking trail through the wetlands, which is located inside the Yuma National Heritage Area. Your hike will take you through marshland, past cottonwood and willows.

Some other really great hikes in the area include the Huachuca trails as well as the Chiricahuas. You will never be far from outdoor adventures when you live in a Castle & Cooke home in Sierra Vista.
