Why Arizonans Look Forward to Monsoon Season Every Summer

Southern Arizona is known for hot summers, which often leaves visitors and newcomers surprised to learn that major thunderstorms are common from mid-June to the end of September. This period is officially known as monsoon season in Sierra Vista and throughout Southern Arizona. During this time, monsoon thunderstorms are a welcome sight for residents of the region. Although monsoon storms can bring forceful winds, lightning, and heavy rain, they also yield some of the most amazing sunsets along with some fresh, cool air during the peak of summer. Continue reading for a closer look at monsoon season, so you know what to expect during your first summer living in Arizona.

What is a monsoon thunderstorm?

The term monsoon comes from the Arabic word mausim, which means season. Monsoon thunderstorms represent a change in the season when winds shift from the west to the south. That change brings moist, tropical winds into the region with thunderstorms triggered by the low pressure systems that develop due to the intense summer heat in the desert. Monsoon storms bring intense, heavy rains, often with sudden downpours. They are also marked by lightning and strong winds. During a monsoon thunderstorm, it’s best to stay indoors and avoid driving, as flash floods are common.

When is monsoon season?

Monsoon season officially begins on June 15th and goes through September 30th. However, the exact timing, frequency, and strength of storms varies depending on several factors.  Different areas of Arizona also see a varying amount of rainfall during the monsoon. For example, Sierra Vista tends to get stronger and more frequent storms than Tucson or Phoenix because it is further south and situated at a higher elevation.

Why do Arizonans enjoy monsoon season so much?

While monsoon thunderstorms can be dangerous if you are not prepared, they also bring some much-needed moisture to the dry desert. Upwards of 50% of Southern Arizona’s annual rainfall comes during monsoon season, at a time when desert streams, wildlife, and plants need it the most. Just after a monsoon storm, the temperature may drop significantly, making it much more pleasant to head out for a walk or sit on your patio once the storm has passed. During storms, you may spot some unforgettable lightning storms and vibrant sunsets.

Safety Tips for Monsoon Storms

As beautiful as monsoon storms are, they do require a little bit of preparation and know-how to stay safe. During the summer, keep an eye on the forecast and stay alert to any flash flood warnings. If you are driving when a monsoon storm hits, pull over to a safe location and wait for the storm to pass. Never attempt to drive through a flooded area – 12 inches of water can carry a car away! Stay indoors during the storm, if possible, as lightning and heavy winds are common. Keep items secured outdoors and trim any large trees in your yard to avoid fallen branches.
