Tips for Dealing With Southern Arizona’s Summer Heat

While Southern Arizona is known for high summer temperatures, the area’s low humidity makes it easier to deal with the heat and stay comfortable all season long. Plus, Sierra Vista’s higher elevation keeps high temperatures in a milder range than areas like Tucson and Phoenix. However, you will want to keep some guidelines in mind to stay fully hydrated and keep your skin protected from sunburns.

Schedule Outdoor Time Early in the Day

Whether you’re planning a hike, a trip to the park with the kids, time in the garden, or a simple walk around the neighborhood, you should schedule your outdoor activities earlier in the day. Temperatures will peak around 4 p.m., while the coolest part of the day will be in the early morning. Aim to be headed back indoors by noon to avoid the highest temperatures of the day.

Stay Hydrated

No matter how long you’ll be out in the heat, you should bring plenty of fresh drinking water. This is especially important if you will be in the direct sun and/or walking, biking, or hiking. In general, you should bring 8-10 ounces of water per person per mile if you’re exercising, or per hour if you’re going to be sedentary.

Protect Yourself From the Sun

Sunburns are a concern during Arizona summers. Consult with a doctor or pharmacist to find the right type of sunscreen for your age and skin type. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go into the sun, and reapply it every two hours. Wear a hat, loose fitting clothing, and sunglasses to increase your protection.
