How to Get Your Kids Involved in Unpacking During Your Move

Once you’ve gone through all of the labor and hassle of moving, you might not be ready to fight another battle. But you and your family still need to unpack, and the sooner the better. Here are some fun, helpful tips for getting your kids involved in unpacking after a move.

Make It a Game

The most fun way to get your kids to help out with unpacking is to turn it into a game. While you’re packing up in your old house, secretly hide certain items, like small stuffed animals or toys, in some of the boxes. Then tell your kids that the first to find all of them wins. Make sure they know that they have to actually put away the items they unpack, not just throw them back in boxes!

Create a Rewards System

Rewards are a great motivator for kids, and rewarding them for their hard work is a positive experience. Create a rewards system in which they get increasingly more appealing rewards the more boxes they unpack. For instance, unpacking three boxes gets them a piece of candy; unpacking five boxes gets them an hour of TV time, etc.

Involve the Kids in a Room Makeover

Another healthy way to motivate your kids to unpack (and be excited about the chore) is to involve them in a room makeover for their new bedroom. Pick out paint colors, new decor, and wall art. But tell your kids that the only way they’ll get their dream bedroom is if they unpack everything and put it away neatly when the time comes.
