Outdoor Destinations to Explore This Summer in Southern Arizona

Summer is officially here, so you may be excited to explore the beautiful outdoor scenery and adventures that Arizona has to offer. Living in Sierra Vista, you have a wealth of natural resources to explore right in your own backyard. So, whether you are looking for a fun day hike, a birdwatching destination, or a place to set up your tent or RV for the night, you have many options to explore.

Lakes in Southern Arizona

Many people think of Southern Arizona as a dry, desert landscape, but there are several areas to have fun on the water. Several lakes offer refreshing oases where you can cool off and have some fun. For a rustic and primitive experience without big crowds, take a trip to Arivaca Lake, which is about 60 miles south of Tucson. Get there via Old Ruby Road, which is a scenic drive in the Coronado National Forest. Boats powered by single engines are allowed, and you might even use your fishing gear to wrangle up dinner with catfish, blue gill, or largemouth bass populating the lake.

Patagonia Lake is a more developed and popular lakeside destination about one hour west of Sierra Vista. Enjoy fishing, swimming, boating, and water skiing with designated high-speed areas for those seeking thrilling adventures on the water. You can also explore some smaller lakes in the region such as Rose Canyon Lake, Riggs Flat Lake, Pena Blanca Lake, and Parker Canyon Lake.

Campgrounds in Southern Arizona

Both Arivaca Lake and Patagonia Lake welcome campers with Patagonia Lake accepting reservations in advance and Arivaca Lake operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Throughout Arizona’s sky islands, you can also find some great forested campsites such as Catalina State Park, Bog Springs Campground, Spencer Canyon Campground, Ramsey Vista Campground, and Reef Townsite Campground. By seeking higher elevations, you can find cooler temperatures and plentiful shade in the area’s ponderosa pine forests.
