Whether you’ve lived in Arizona your whole life, or are a new transplant, the summer is the best time to take advantage of some amazing weekend getaways. You can get out of the heat by traveling north to Flagstaff, Prescott, Sedona, or Jerome. You can do some mountain camping or rent a cabin on Mt. Lemmon or in the White Mountains. Or you can take a family-friendly trip to Lake Patagonia or Bisbee and Tombstone.
No matter what your hobbies are, you can find a mini-adventure waiting outside your door in Arizona’s rich and vibrant culture and landscape! Take a look at our top picks for Arizona weekend getaways this summer.
Bisbee & Tombstone
Bisbee and Tombstone provide entertainment for the whole family. With Bisbee’s art galleries, museums, and antiquing, you can spend a day wandering the streets. At night, there’s live music, games, and casual dining. Take a ghost tour or relax in a themed hotel. In Tombstone, you can enjoy the area’s rich history or a Wild West shootout. Pick up some souvenirs, take a walk through the Boot Hill graveyard, and enjoy the haunted tour of the Bird Cage Theater.
Lake Patagonia
Visiting Lake Patagonia in the summer is a treat, as the lake water is still fresh and cold. You can picnic by the lake, take out a paddle boat or canoe, and even camp under the stars. Patagonia has museums and antiquing, as well as hotels, restaurants, hiking trails, and wildlife viewing areas. Stop by the Wagon Wheel Saloon for amazing homemade tacos. You can also stop for a wine tasting in Sonoita on your way home!
Camping or Cabins in the Mountains
The best way to beat the Arizona heat in the summer is to rent a cabin or go camping in the mountains for the weekend. The White Mountains offer cabin rentals, campgrounds, dispersed camping, and group camping, depending on your tolerance for and skill level in the great outdoors. The White Mountains are also near many historic sites that are interesting for all ages, as well as scenic views and awe-inspiring wildlife. If you’re interested in a more rustic, self-guided tour, take a trip to Tip Top, about 50 miles north of Phoenix. This old mining town was quickly abandoned within a decade, and you can explore the abandoned ruins and buildings.
Visit One of Arizona’s Ghost Towns
Arizona is full of rich culture and heritage. A unique weekend adventure that is fun for the whole family is visiting one of Arizona’s ghost towns. Camp out at Kentucky Camp, or rent a cabin, and hope you don’t see any ghosts! Visit Vulture City Ghost Town and take a haunted tour of the Vulture Mine. Visit the haunted Jerome Grand Hotel or The Haunted Hamburger, or enjoy live music at the Spirit Room.
Adults-Only Camping Adventure
If you don’t have children or just want some adults-only fun, this weekend camping adventure is the perfect chance to try something new and exciting! The Bad Decisions Camp Out at Sonoita Vineyards runs from August 13 at 8:00 am through August 14 at 10:00 am. You can camp out at the beautiful vineyards and participate in wine tasting at Sonoita Vineyards and AZ Hops and Vines. You can come just for the day, or camp out under the stars while watching the annual Perseid meteor shower. There will also be live music, water slides, a bacon tent, chocolate, cheese, and beer.
