Tips for Choosing Interior Paint Colors

Interior paint is like a foundation. It sets the tone for a room and helps tie all of the design elements together. With so many options to choose from, it can be challenging to decide which paint hues you should select for your home. Here are some tips from Castle & Cooke for choosing your interior paint colors.

Design First

It may seem backwards, but you should choose a shade of paint after you have already cemented your overall interior design scheme. It will be a much smaller order to match a single paint color to your furniture and decor than it would be to find multiple pieces that match your paint.

Neutral Ground

Neutral colors are a great option for many homes. They allow your furniture and decor to have the spotlight, and they’re easy to match if you get tired of your current interior design plan. This isn’t to say that you should never use a bright color, but many homeowners find that neutrals are easier to work around.

Lights Up

Those swatches at the paint store may give you an idea of what the color will look like, but any hue will appear distorted under various types of lighting. To accurately gauge what a paint color will look like in your home, be sure to get the largest swatch possible and test it on your walls in your home’s natural lighting.

Gloss vs. Matte

Every paint will have a certain finish that affects its final appearance. Glossy paint will have a sheen to it that may be too reflective for large walls, making it best for smaller areas like trim. Meanwhile, a satin finish paint will be less shiny and is easily cleaned. Once you know which room of your home is going to be painted, you can choose the best finish for your needs.
