One of the best ways to make a new house feel like home is to hang art on the walls. Art expresses who you are and helps to pull the colors and accents into your space that you want. However, hanging wall art is more than just hammering some nails into the wall and hoping for the best. Make your wall art look its best with these tips for hanging it like a pro.
Go for Eye Level Placement
One of the biggest mistakes that people make with hanging wall art is that they hang it too high. Instead, most art should be hung at eye level. A trick that the professionals use is to make sure that the center point of the piece of art is 57 inches from the floor. That measurement is the average “eye level” placement for most people, and sticking to it will also create a smooth visual midline for all of your art. A few exceptions to keep in mind about this rule, however, include if you have low ceilings or are hanging art over the back of a sofa. For low ceilings, measure from the floor to the ceiling, divide the measurements into fourths, and hang the artwork in the third quadrant. For art behind a sofa, leave eight inches of clearance.
Use Spaces Off the Walls
It’s called wall art, but that doesn’t mean that the wall is the only place it can go. Large art pieces can be propped against a wall, out of a high traffic area, to create a modern look. Small pieces of art can be used in the same way that you might use framed pictures. Mixing up the placement of your art this way keeps your home visually interesting and engaging.
Balance Your Pieces
If you’re going for a gallery or studio wall, make sure you have a balanced collection of pieces. Ideally, larger pieces should go in the middle and heavy pieces should go to the bottom, while light pieces are in the upper righthand corner. Everything else can go between those placements. It is good to leave at least two and up to five inches between frames, so that the space doesn’t look too crowded, but be sure to keep your spacing consistent.
