Tips for Packing Before Your Big Move

Planning a big move can be overwhelming, especially if you’re moving to another state. Luckily, if you start planning early enough, you can get much of the packing done long before your move date, allowing you to focus on smaller details as the move approaches. Here are some tips for packing before your big move:

Start as Early as Possible

It’s never too early to start packing. As soon as you have a move date scheduled, start putting boxes together and packing up items that you know you won’t need before you get settled in your new home. This also gives you enough time to go through your belongings and decide if you want to donate or sell things before you leave. You can pack up seasonal clothing, holiday decorations, household knickknacks, and anything else that you won’t use in the next few months.

Label Boxes With Room and Contents

Labeling your boxes will help you throughout the moving process. It will help your movers know which room each box belongs in, and it will help you prioritize unpacking so you have access to your most-needed items in your new house right away. Label each box with both the room it belongs to, and some sense of the contents of the box. For example, Kitchen – mugs and bowls; or Bathroom – towels.

Use Bubble Wrap and Packing Paper

Many people forget to use bubble wrap and packing paper when packing up fragile items. Bubble wrap is best for knickknacks, unusually shaped fragile items, and lamps. Packing paper is perfect for plates, cups, bowls, and anything else that can be stacked but must be protected during transit.
