Measuring Your New Living Room
The first step in planning your living room’s layout is to measure its length and width from wall to wall. Then, you can either use a computer program, graph paper, or an app from a furniture store to build a basic blueprint. If you’re using graph paper, consider using a 1:1 scale for its simplicity. For instance, if your living room is 16 X 10 feet, this converts to a 16 X 10-inch box.
Adding Your Existing Furniture
Some people prefer to purchase brand new sets of furniture when they move into a new home, while others like to reuse older pieces. If you’re bringing your old furniture into the new living room, you’ll need to measure its dimensions and plot it on the graph. At this point, you’ll need to consider the layout of the room. Interior designers tend to advise against lining up couches against a wall. Instead, “float” the couch off the wall, providing enough space to walk through.
Choosing Brand New Furniture
If you’ll be purchasing brand new furniture for your new home, it’s best to start with the biggest pieces, like the couch and armchairs. A typical loveseat is about five feet long and about 40 inches deep. Remember to leave enough room for end tables, which often range from 20 to 30 inches in both directions. You’ll also likely want lounge chairs or armchairs. When designing your new space, remember to keep the different pieces of furniture proportionate to each other. That is, accompany an overstuffed sectional with equally overstuffed armchairs, or a streamlined loveseat with small footprint accent chairs.
